The procedure itself takes around 5-10 minutes, however you should expect to be here for up to one hour.

It is optimal to perform the procedure on a full bladder so, if possible, do not empty your bladder until after the procedure.

The procedure is done by inserting an ultrasound probe into the rectum until the prostate can be identified. Your physician will inject a local anesthetic (lidocaine) to numb the prostate and diminish the pain from the procedure, measure the prostate volume and then proceed to performing biopsies (usually 12) using a hollow core needle.

Some physicians require a urine sample prior to discharge in which case the nurse will provide you with a collection cup after the procedure.

Before Your Procedure

You should eat or drink as you usually do (you should not fast the night before). If you are diabetic, you should take your medication and eat as your normally do. You should come to the surgery center with a full bladder as this helps us identify the prostate with ultrasound. If you wish to receive nitrous oxide (laughing gas) during your procedure, you will need to sign a consent at the front desk during check-in and pay an additional fee of $100.

Please be sure to take antibiotics on the morning of the procedure; generally you will be prescribe two different antibiotics.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Please plan a quiet, comfortable day with light activity with no heavy lifting. You may experience blood in the urine, stool, and semen. You are asked to increase your fluid intake after the procedure and continue light activity until the all bleeding has resolved. We recommend no sexual activity for one week following the procedure. You may resume a regular diet immediately.

Your biopsy results will take approximately 7 – 10 business days. Your physician will call you with the results. If you have not heard from us in 14 days, please give us a call at 410.266.8049.
